Why is My Hyundai Check Engine Light On?

check engine light
There it is — the dreaded check engine light, illuminated and glaring back at you from your new Hyundai’s instrument cluster. Should you be panicking? Many drivers do panic, but the truth is, the Hyundai check engine light or check engine light for any other make, can indicate a variety of minor or serious repairs. From a broken oxygen sensor to a loose gas cap, there could be a number of potential issues at play.

What Could Trigger the Check Engine Light?

Here are a few common causes of an illuminated check engine light:

  • Mass Airflow Sensor: Also known as a MAF sensor, this engine component measures the amount of air moving into the engine so the correct amount of fuel can be added. MAF problems can lead to lowered gas mileage, stalling, and increased emissions. You can avoid this problem by changing the air filter.
  • Oxygen Sensor: Oxygen sensors detect the amount of oxygen in a vehicle’s exhaust to measure how much fuel is being used. Gas mileage plummets when this problem occurs, and if ignored, can cause a catalytic converter malfunction.
  • Catalytic Converter: This component converts carbon monoxide into safer compounds to help reduce pollution. Again, gas mileage can be impacted, and you’ll notice decreased acceleration.
  • Loose Gas Cap: If your car’s gas cap isn’t properly secured, the engine light will turn on.

How Can I Fix the Problem?

Serious problems such as low oil pressure or engine overheating can illuminate your check engine light, but it’s important to pay attention to other dashboard lights and gauges as well. Follow these tips to help prevent engine failure:

  • Read your Hyundai owner’s manual for more information on the dashboard lights, and what could possibly cause an engine warning. You can also learn more about your dash lights and what they mean.
  • If the check engine light is lit, check for other problems that could be the cause. Look at the gauges and lights for signs of low oil pressure or overheating. If you suspect a serious problem, find a safe area to stop and shut the engine off. You may notice the light is yellow or red; a yellow check engine light means there’s a problem you should investigate further, while red means you need to stop driving immediately.
  • Make sure the gas cap is secure. If it needs to be tightened, do so, then wait a few minutes for the system to reset.
  • Reduce the weight of your car. If you’re driving a Hyundai Kona or Santa Fe that’s packed to the gills, try unloading some heavier items.
  • If you can’t find the source of the problem, bring your vehicle to our certified service center near Cartersville and Cedartown. Our technicians will read the engine code, diagnose, and fix the problem.
